The retail price of the Rouge et Noir edition issued for the company's centenary was 3,800 euros in 2006. The name harks back to the firm's beginnings: founded in Hamburg in 1906, it brought out a safety pen under the name Rouge et Noir from 1909, black with a red cap top, whose nib was wound back into the barrel to close it. The anniversary edition quotes that design language.
No blanket statement can be made about the market value today. Prices for anniversary and special issues fluctuate considerably and depend above all on whether the outer box, certificate and papers are all present, whether the pen is unwritten, and what condition the nib, the cap ring and the precious resin are in. Hammer prices achieved for comparable pieces at auction are a useful guide; asking prices in the trade are not.
