Montblanc does not release technical documentation to the public. Detailed photographs and drawings of the individual parts do exist, but they stay in the internal domain of the factory and its authorised dealers. How the twist mechanism of a Bohème or the innards of a special edition are actually put together can therefore only be worked out from pictures of dismantled examples that collectors and workshops occasionally publish, such as those of a stripped-down 146 from the 1950s. Taking an intact pen apart yourself is not to be recommended: many joints are press-fitted or glued and cannot be separated without special tools and without damage.
On the models themselves, Rösler's collector books are the standard work. They contain an almost complete survey of the models produced and, in the appendix, systematic compilations of shapes, caps, cap rings and clips that also help in identifying unknown pieces and in recognising fakes. A complete list of every writing instrument ever made, issued by the manufacturer, does not exist; even the collector literature expressly claims no more than to be nearly complete.
