Collectors report that Montblanc did indeed issue a Newton edition, around 1999 and in a very small run. What has been handed down is that it was always a set: a 149 fountain pen with Helmut Newton's signature engraved on it, sold only together with a hand-signed poster or book. Accounts of the number made vary between roughly 75 and 100 examples, and red gold trim is also mentioned. None of this is conclusively documented, so the details should be passed on only with that reservation.
What is certain, on the other hand, is that it was not a pen from the Special Anniversary Edition. Listings that combine a body from that edition with a stuck-on edition number, parts from other pens and a crudely engraved signature are home-made. The usual marks of such concoctions are numbers the model never had, engravings in a different typeface and depth, silver-coloured rings where gold-plated ones belong, and packaging and papers that match neither the pen nor each other. All this is frequently accompanied by a mawkish sales text meant to push the buyer into a quick decision.
