The word “Pix” on the ring goes back to Montblanc's traditional designation for pencils and ballpoints and is nothing out of the ordinary in itself. Nor does the direction in which the engraving reads serve as evidence of a fake: the words “Montblanc Meisterstück” normally read towards the tip, yet there are documented originals from the 1980s on which they run the other way. Deviations of this kind arose in production and, while rare, are a matter of record.
An unusual engraving is therefore neither proof of a fake nor proof of authenticity. Far more telling are the clip and the star inlay, the crispness of the ring engraving, how well the threads fit, the mechanism and, on fountain pens, the nib and feed. A single conspicuous feature should always be judged in context, and sharp close-up photographs compared with a known-good pen of the same years, before any verdict is reached. If doubt remains, the only answer is to have an experienced dealer examine the pen in the hand.
