The 161 LeGrand is the large version of the Meisterstück ballpoint, the 164 Classique the slimmer one. They are told apart chiefly by diameter and length, which only a photograph can show that pictures the whole pen, ideally alongside something of known size. Since the LeGrand sells for considerably more than the Classique, the two models are repeatedly confused in listings, or deliberately conflated.
At auction, then, it pays to work out which pictures actually show the pen on offer. Where a single crisp manufacturer's photograph appears among several of the seller's own, often blurred, shots, it will as a rule depict not the item itself but the model it is meant to be sold as. Before paying, get the seller to confirm the model designation explicitly and choose a payment method with buyer protection. Cap rings that look unusual, on the other hand, are not automatically a mark of a fake: poor image quality, lighting and honest wear often lead to misjudgements here, and many a suspected case turns out in the end to be an unremarkable original.
