The name Chopin applies to the fountain pen alone, that is to the Meisterstück 145. It belongs to the Meisterstück Classique line, even though it is somewhat larger than the rollerball of the same range. The other instruments in the line — ballpoint, rollerball and pencil — are available in the same finish, but they do not carry the name Chopin.
The range was offered both in black precious resin with gold-plated trim and in the Platinum Line with platinum-plated trim. A ballpoint with platinum-plated trim is therefore no sign in itself of a fake.
Caution is nevertheless in order when buying: fakes of the Classique series in particular are plentiful, often together with counterfeit service booklets whose lettering differs from the original on close inspection. Anyone wanting certainty should buy from an authorised Montblanc dealer, or have a pen examined by an experienced collector before parting with the money.
