The rubberised surface of the StarWalker Rubber Line is reckoned unproblematic in everyday use. There was isolated criticism of the rubber compound on the earliest production runs; Montblanc revised that compound several times, so that no complaints worth mentioning have come to light on later examples. Pens from the first years of production show at most minor scuffing on edges and cap after years of regular use, while the coating remains sound elsewhere. Wholesale peeling or a sticky surface is not the rule where the pen is stored sensibly.
Ballpoints, rollerballs and accessories such as key fobs from the Rubber Line likewise survive prolonged heavy use without conspicuous marks. To be kind to the surface, keep the pen on its own in a case and away from solvents, greasy skin creams and sustained heat, since rubberised finishes react more sensitively to these than precious resin or metal. Light wear on an older piece is normal and in itself no grounds for complaint.
