A LeGrand rollerball with a stainless steel finish was pictured in a trade journal in 1999, but it never reached the shops. Montblanc did not introduce the Stainless Steel series until around 2000, so for 1999 there is no evidence of a stainless steel LeGrand rollerball at all. Anyone offered such a pen should examine it with corresponding scepticism; why the prototype in the photograph never went into production is not known.
According to collectors, the Meisterstück Solitaire LeGrand rollerball was only ever supplied in vermeil with line guilloché, in vermeil Doué with a burgundy barrel, in sterling silver with line guilloché, in sterling silver Doué, and as the Ramses II and the Nikolai I; for the Nikolai I no platinum-plated version is known. Whether the silver and vermeil versions were also made with a grained guilloché has never been settled.
