The German penmaker Achim Velte (Style of Writing) made this fountain pen to special order in 2020 in just five examples, using galalith, a plastic derived from casein that was widespread in the first half of the twentieth century and is prized for its horn-like, almost marbled appearance. The pen has an 18-carat gold nib, offered in M only, bronze rings and, deliberately, no clip.
The dimensions: about 13.9 centimetres closed, about 12.8 centimetres uncapped from the nib tip, roughly 14.7 millimetres in diameter at the section and about 15.8 millimetres at the cap, weight around 28 grams. It was supplied in a fine presentation box with an outer carton and a leather case.
Filling is by cartridge or converter, the converter being screwed in. The maker recommends unscrewing the converter to fill and drawing the ink straight into it, so that the section does not become discoloured; with a natural material such as galalith that is sound advice. Velte was already known to collectors for the fountain pens and ballpoints on the theme of the Nebra sky disc that he issued in 2013.
