The Unicef editions of the year 2004 are, strictly speaking, standard production Meisterstück 149 pens; the writing instrument itself was not altered in comparison with the regular model. What is special lies in the packaging. Specially designed boxes were created for the three editions, namely by Andrée Putman, Helmut Jahn and Tom Sachs. The case thus becomes an accessory for the desk in its own right and is the actual distinguishing feature of the edition.
The market launch took place in the autumn of 2004. As the fountain pen corresponds to an ordinary 149, the completely preserved original box is the decisive feature by which a Unicef edition can be recognised at all at a later date.
