A certain amount of free play is deliberately built into the piston mechanism. Once the blind cap has been released nothing happens at first; only after not quite a full turn does the mechanism take hold perceptibly and the piston begin to move. This idle phase prevents the piston from being operated unintentionally and ink from being forced into the cap or the section. It occurs whatever the ink level and is not a defect.
What does need checking is the blind cap itself, the head of the piston mechanism. It must tighten down far enough to sit securely and not turn of its own accord in use. If it can no longer be tightened, or spins on without reaching a stop, there is a fault. On a pen less than a year old that is plainly a matter for complaint, to be handled through the dealer or the factory service department. Attempting a repair yourself is not advisable: the mechanism is easily damaged in the process, and any warranty claim is lost.
