There is some room for negotiation when buying from an authorised dealer, but it is narrow. As of 2008 regular customers were typically given around ten per cent, with roughly fifteen per cent regarded as the absolute ceiling. As a maker of luxury goods Montblanc keeps a close watch on price stability, and dealers who go noticeably further risk being cut off from supply. Anyone buying second-hand instead should keep that range in mind, because an apparent bargain is often not far below what a dealer would come to, warranty included.
With the Meisterstück 145, the Classique, it is also worth looking at the converter supplied with it, since it reveals whether the accessory really belongs to that pen. Older piston converters are simply pushed into the barrel. The newer versions have a thread at the lower end and screw firmly onto the section; inside there is also a small metal spring that makes sure the ink reaches the feed reliably. An old push-fit converter in new packaging is not a mark of a fake, but it does show that pen, converter and box did not arrive together.
