Collectors put the launch of the Traveller, model number 147, at around 1997; there is no documented introduction date. To place an individual pen in time, the markings on the clip and clip ring are the thing to go by. The word Pix on the back of the clip was used from about the year 2000; on more recent pens Made in Germany appears in its place. If neither is present and the clip ring carries only the country of origin, Germany, together with a number, the pen dates from before that.
A further clue is the way the number on the clip ring has been applied: on older examples it is engraved, on later ones lasered. Taken together, the two features allow a rough dating to within a few years. Montblanc publishes no serial number list for production models from which the exact year of manufacture could be read off, so this approximation is as far as one can get.
