The Writers Edition Voltaire appeared in a run of 20,000 fountain pens, each piece carrying a serial number followed by the size of the total run. A limited edition only develops collector value, however, if all its components are present, that is the pen, the case, the outer box and the complete papers. If anything is missing, or the piece has been used, what is left is essentially an ordinary everyday writing instrument.

For used pieces of that sort the realistic order of magnitude in 2007 was at most about a quarter of the former shop price. Unlimited models such as the Meisterstück Solitaire 146 in stainless steel follow the ordinary second-hand market in any case and gain little from their accessories; in neither case is a valuation possible without photographs and a precise statement of condition.
