In the 1950s Montblanc offered the striped Meisterstück in four versions: sizes 142, 144 and 146 in fir green; the same sizes in silver grey; a pale lime green that is not faded fir green but a colour in its own right (here the 142 is not confirmed); and finally a fir-green variant with straight rather than curved stripes, so far known only in sizes 144 and 146. The 172 pencil was available to match each colour; ballpoints were not yet part of these sets.
Identifying the colour calls for care. The silver-grey celluloid discolours over the decades and can then look distinctly greenish, so silver-grey pens are regularly offered as green ones — often in good faith. Fir green, conversely, fades, but never reaches the clear tone of the lime-green material. Comparing the pen in daylight and looking at the sheltered areas under the cap rim, where the original depth of colour has survived, usually settles the question.
