A broken barrel does not necessarily mean the pen is a write-off. According to information from the factory, Montblanc puts aside and stores a certain quantity of spare parts for limited editions as well, though quantities and prices are not published. In practice a repair of this kind goes through an authorised dealer, who passes the pen on to the manufacturer's workshop, where it is assessed and an estimate drawn up. Beyond that, Montblanc is in principle able to make individual parts specially. That is technically possible but correspondingly expensive, and as a rule only worthwhile for editions with a high collector value.
The obvious idea of simply replacing the barrel from an identical model rarely works with the Writers Editions and the Patron of Arts editions, because their bodies are specific to the edition in their decoration, their engravings, the edition number and sometimes in their dimensions. An independent pen workshop can in some cases glue a break or stabilise it from the inside; the repair usually remains visible and markedly reduces the collector value, so the effort is chiefly justified where the piece has sentimental value.
