Modern Montblanc nibs are very stiff and hardly bend by themselves during normal writing-in, so it is more likely that the nib was not optimally set up at the factory or that there was transport damage. With obliquely ground nibs (O nibs) like OB or OBB, the nib angle to the paper is particularly critical; if they are not held at the right angle, they scratch and only deliver their typical incisive writing image when held correctly. A slight correction can be made oneself with experience; otherwise the piece should be returned via the dealer to Montblanc.
