The Pix 72 is a post-war push-button pencil, made by Montblanc in large numbers, and as a sturdy everyday pencil it remains entirely usable today. It works with leads of 1.18 millimetres — an old size that has nothing to do with the 0.5 and 0.7 millimetre fine leads in common use now. Replacement leads in that diameter are still offered for historic push-button pencils, and the mechanism itself usually works reliably even after decades.
Because it was so widely sold, the model is not a rare one for collectors, and that is reflected in the price. Versions with an unusual barrel material or with a precious metal overlay are rated more highly. A striking, pearlescent surface, though, can be neither confirmed nor placed without seeing the pencil, since alongside genuine special versions there are also later refurbishments and barrels from other pens. Reliable identification calls for good photographs, or for showing the pencil to an experienced collector or specialist dealer.
