The Meisterstück Solitaire Stainless Steel I line has been out of the range since the 2000s and can now be found only on the collectors' market. In the Classique size there were the fountain pen, the ballpoint, the pencil in 0.7 and in 0.5 millimetre lead, and the rollerball; in the larger LeGrand version only the fountain pen was offered.
The smooth, unengraved stainless steel surface is held to be the treatment that appeals most to the purists among Montblanc collectors, but in daily use it was extraordinarily sensitive: every fingerprint showed at once. Since Montblanc builds its pens expressly to be written with and not for the display cabinet, the series was reworked. The successor line, Steel II, was given a laser engraving on the surface yet, unusually, kept the identification numbers of its predecessor. The two series therefore cannot be told apart by the number, only by eye.
