Limited Montblanc writing instruments may be repaired only at the factory in Hamburg; boutiques and independent dealers merely take them in and pass them on. Charging is by flat rate, and those rates apply to limited editions as well. Where no body parts have to be replaced, the cost stays within bounds: around 2005 a repair of this kind came to between 49 and 79 euros, depending on whether the pen was handed in at a Montblanc boutique or at an independent dealer, who passes on handling, carriage and insurance costs.
With limited editions there is always one body part, a different one from model to model, that is not available as a spare. This is deliberate, so that no additional examples can be assembled from spare parts and the limitation is preserved. If the part bearing the limitation number, usually the cap, is replaced, and provided it was made as a spare at all, the pen is given a new edition number prefixed with an S for Service.
It gets expensive when India ink has been used instead of fountain-pen ink: it destroys the piston mechanism and may call for a new barrel, which in the case of a limited edition may no longer be obtainable at all. A piston knob that has been twisted off points to a seized piston and is in every case a matter for the factory. Around 2005 some 500 euros was a fair price for a Voltaire in sound condition.
