Only to a very limited extent. Spectacle frames and sunglasses carrying the Montblanc emblem are licensed products, made over the years by a succession of outside manufacturers. They were sold through some of the boutiques — mostly as sunglasses — and through a handful of opticians, who also stocked the prescription frames. The range was wide, and there was never any consistent system behind the model designations.
Identifying a particular frame from a description or a photograph therefore rarely works, and even the maker, the production period and the original selling price usually cannot be established after the fact. The brand owner holds hardly any documentation on these licensed products either; an enquiry will often yield no more than an approximate year of introduction, 1998 in the case of some of the frames. The Montblanc Meisterstück engraving running around the frame, the star set into a gold-coloured disc at the ends of the temples and a multi-digit number on the temple are typical features of these frames, but they are of no use for dating.
