The pens are made in a Hamburg studio from solid woods, among them African savannah wood, grenadilla and purpleheart; snakewood is worked as well. Around three years pass from the block of wood to the finished fountain pen, and about half a year longer in the case of snakewood. The woods must be stored warm and dry and demand continuous attention.
The turning is done by hand: within seconds a square piece of wood becomes a rounded blank. This is drilled, sanded and bathed in oil; the threads too are cut in-house, so that nib, barrel and cap form a continuous line. In this way pens are created with a good grip that lie warm in the hand. The maker is a trained joiner and turner and additionally studied design at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (University of Fine Arts) in Hamburg; originally he made wooden furniture and home accessories before he came to the building of writing instruments.
