The Scenium range is faked as well. The models are relatively simple in construction and get by without elaborate mechanics or costly materials, which makes them easier to copy. Many Scenium fakes give themselves away through an idiosyncratic design that was never offered in that form: bodies finished in silver or gold, unusual patterning on the barrel, and combinations of fittings that Montblanc never used. Comparison with period catalogue illustrations or a model overview of the series is therefore the first step, and often already the decisive one.
Beyond that, the general checks apply: a crisply and cleanly executed star in the cap crown, evenly struck imprints with no blurring of the letters, clean cap rings free of notches or burrs, a clip and fittings that sit without play, threads that run true, and a weight that feels right. Since Scenium pens were conceived from the outset as a corporate gift as well and went into circulation in large numbers, a good many genuine examples carrying a company engraving are about on the second-hand market; an engraving of that kind says nothing against authenticity in itself, but it does reduce the collector's value.
