For the drawing of Japanese and Chinese characters, nibs are reworked in Japan as bespoke items. The starting point is an EF nib whose tip is reshaped so that the stroke forms required for these characters can be produced. At first glance the nibs appear bent, but they are not; they follow a deliberate modification.
The reworking does, however, have its price: because no tipping material remains, the bare gold wears down comparatively quickly, so the service life of such nibs is limited. They are attributed to a nib specialist well known in the Japanese collectors' community, who by his own account worked for Montblanc for many years.
