Dörrbecker Quintessenz
- Limited Edition 88 -
What does a fountain pen look like designed by THE expert for high-quality writing instruments?!
Axel Hübener is one of the most significant collectors of vintage writing instruments and limited editions. He operates a business in Bremen for high-quality writing instruments as well as a Montblanc boutique. Probably no one else knows exclusive fountain pens as well as he does. So it was certainly only a matter of time before Axel Hübener brought his own fountain pen to market.
To cut to the chase, the fountain pen lives up to its name. If there were ever such a thing as the "perfect" fountain pen, this one comes closest to it.
Overall, the Quintessence impresses from the first glance with understatement.
What you cannot see from the photos, however:
The fountain pen is an absolute "hand pleaser" - anyone who has held it once will not want to give it up so quickly. The surface is very "smooth", but still "warm". A combination that gives this writing instrument a very special feel. The solution to the riddle is the material:
This fountain pen is made of celluloid from the 30s - a material that is rarely used today for writing instruments (and if so, only for Limited Editions).
While the exterior design is timeless and classic, inside there is a modern
"Power Filler - Twin Tank" mechanism that provides a particularly
large ink capacity, and should be insensitive to pressure differences (e.g., in an aircraft). The piston mechanism is made of metal – a feature that today is unfortunately rarely
still found in fountain pens today. After initial attempts, the operation of the mechanism is extremely simple and practical.
The beautiful 14kt gold nib also impresses with an extraordinarily harmonious writing performance. While "F" nibs from other manufacturers can sometimes scratch, this Visconti nib glides over the paper without any hesitation.
Fazit:
The Quintessenz is a fountain pen of "superlatives" – anyone who has the great fortune to hold this wonderful writing instrument in their own hands will not willingly give it up again. The Dörrbecker Quintessenz is, however, limited to only 88 pieces... and unfortunately already sold out by now...
